SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 36
(By Senator Chafin)
Urging the Congress of the United States to continue present
levels of support for the corporation for public
broadcasting.
Whereas, Some leaders in Congress have proposed to cut all
federal funding for the corporation for public broadcasting,
which supports public radio and television stations throughout
the nation; and
Whereas, Funds provided through the corporation for public
broadcasting make possible the production and local airing of
public television programs such as "Sesame Street", "Nova" and
the "MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour" and public radio broadcasts such
as "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered" among many
nationally produced programs; and
Whereas, The West Virginia educational broadcasting
authority would be forced to cut funds which provide high-
quality, noncommercial television and radio programming, from
funds through the corporation for public broadcasting; and
Whereas, West Virginia's public television and public radio stations inform, entertain and teach the many thousands of
citizens who use them every day; these include television
stations WPBY-TV, Huntington/Charleston; WSWP-TV, Beckley; WNPB-
TV, Morgantown; and radio stations WVPN, Charleston; WVPW,
Buckhannon; WVEP, Martinsburg; WVWV, Huntington; WVNP, Wheeling;
WVPG, Parkersburg; WVPM, Morgantown; WVPB, Beckley; and
translators in Elkins and Clarksburg; and
Whereas, Total funding for the corporation for public
broadcasting is two hundred eighty-five million dollars, which
represents only one dollar and nine cents per American for the
distinguished and highly valued programming provided by public
radio and television; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature urges the Congress of the United States
to continue the present levels of support for the corporation for
public broadcasting; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby
requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the members of
the West Virginia Congressional delegation.
